Why dog lovers have this preconceived notion that small dogs are more difficult to educate than medium sized or large breed dogs, I will never be able to figure out. Housebreaking a puppy, irrespective of its size should never be difficult.
Small dog training, is no different from training a puppy of any other size. While training any puppy will have its peculiarities, based on its breed, practically all other facets remain the same, and the method to training the puppy should remain the same, irrespective its size.
Having said that, I will make an exception here, and admit that small dog training may present complications in two areas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Nonetheless, this is not because the size of the dog breed is small, but 10 times out of 10, because of the owner.
If a small breed puppy is aggressive and is difficult to train, or if a tiny breed pup cannot be crate trained or poses difficulties in being bathroom trained, it is the owner who has not knowingly contributed to this situation. Let us examine how and why.
Aggression.
Small dogs are loved because they are adorable, they are like playthings. Owners delight in having their pet sit on their laps. This kind of indulgence is where the trouble starts. The natural aggressive trait of the canine, is to declare ownership over its sector, its food, even its trainer; all canines need to be the alpha dog.
It is the aggressive streak in the canine animal that causes it to climb on to the lap of its master, especially when there are lots of humans gathered in the room.
This is a obvious act of aggression. Instead of admonishing the animal, every owner bar no one, would cuddle the pooch, despite the fact it jumped on to their lap without being called, developing the aggressive streak in the pup. As a result the owner has accepted the dog's basic instinct to be the alpha dog.
Growling and getting angry at a a larger size dog is another clear act of violence. To the owner, and even the onlookers, this is seen as cute, because one dog is little while the other is big. Most owners cuddle the dog instead of chastising it, when it displays this aggression with a larger dog.
The above are but illustrations as to why small dogs are aggressive, and definitely not because small dog training is complicated.
Bathroom Training
Owners choose to haul their small pups around no matter where they are, even when they are in the house and that makes it plain difficult to bathroom train them
It comes natural to the owners of miniature breed dogs to carry the animal to the designated place where the pooch should go to the toilet and then carry it back into the house.
It is this practice of carrying the dog to its appointed toilet area that is the cause of all complications. In addition, as the pup is as a rule carried around so much it has no way of it telling or alerting the owner that it has to make its business.
Small dog training begins with treating the dog as any other large sized dog. They have to be taken to their bathroom area on a leash. If owners avoid carrying their small breed dogs they would have no troubles in training them.
Dog crate training, is the most important part of dog training, and so it has to be, even in Small Dog Training.
