There are so many arrangements, expenditures and stresses that go along with preparing for a wedding. If couples aren't careful they can get so involved with planning the wedding and trying to get all the details right that there is little time to enjoy the experience. When my niece was arranging her wedding she had three bridal showers to attend, reception plans to get in order and was attempting to find a venue for the rehearsal dinner. The third bridal shower was scheduled at my home. I am her godmother so I had wanted to make it special for her. A few days before the wedding shower we talked on the telephone. She sounded very anxious. She and her fiance were also having difficulties deciding on the best wedding songs for the nuptials. I suggested that she arrive the night before the shower and stay all night and we would chill out and I would help her organize a list of what still had to be done prior to the wedding. She thought this sounded like a good plan.
I did the vast majority of the arrangements for the wedding shower prior to my niece coming so that we could give attention to her requirements. She shared that the rehearsal dinner was her main stress due to the fact that the location they had reserved had double booked, so they needed to locate a brand new location. We began by working on finding the best wedding songs for the wedding ceremony so we could get one need out of the way thereby giving reassurance that the other would be dealt with as well. As I predicted finding the best wedding songs was just a matter of searching the net, listening to samples, placing some orders and that was that. Now to tackle the rehearsal dinner.
The wedding rehearsal supper is traditionally handled by the groom's family; as a matter of fact a number of individuals refer to the occasion as the groom's supper. My niece's fiance is from a different state so his family is prepared to pay for the rehearsal dinner, but they are not able to assist with making the arrangements. My niece had touched base with the restaurant where the wedding reception will be at, but the only space available was the section where the wedding reception would be happening. My niece explained that the plan was to decorate the reception area before going to the church for the rehearsal.
We called two nearby restaurants to see if they could accommodate the rehearsal dinner. Both had other gatherings booked. Her fiance's parents are divorced, also both have married again. This meant that there were additional people to include in the rehearsal dinner. This was also adding to her anxiety due to the fact that she was attempting to figure out the etiquette for seating. She had the seating chart approved for the wedding day, but not knowing where the rehearsal dinner would be happening diminished her ability to arrange a chart.
I asked my niece if she had reached out to the church to look into if the fellowship area would be available. Everybody could just socialize and have a light catered meal. This would be much less formal and would be easy to plan. The fellowship area was open that evening. We called two delis and ordered catering. My niece called her fiance and told him the brand-new plans for the rehearsal dinner. He thought this sounded great. He would make arrangements to have a buddy of his tend bar and would organize for the drinks.
The rehearsal dinner was a nice relaxed evening. The guests were able to mingle and socialize and the bride and groom did not feel pressured to sit in one spot while everybody ordered their food and had it served. With having a buffet line the tone was very casual and the out of town guests didn't have to try and find another place in an area that they weren't familiar with.
