Work was starting to be too frantic for a young police officer named Lonnie. Even though he had only been on the police force for four years, he was already very well known as a very hard worker who rarely refused working overtime. In actual fact, he was now working twenty-five to thirty hours of overtime each week and, as a result, he felt like he was losing his grip on his personal life. What made the situation more complicated, however, was the fact that Lonnie started going out drinking with a gang of fellow officers after work.
Obviously Lonnie was in a psychological and health-related rut and going through some adverse signs of alcoholism. Where Lonnie really noticed drinking related problems and alcoholism signs, on the other hand, was in his marriage and in his family life. His wife wasn't really a nag, but she often asked him to stay at home more with her and with the kids instead of going out and wasting money while drinking with his buddies.
In his heart of hearts, it was clear to Lonnie that his careless and irresponsible drinking was negatively affecting his pocketbook, relationship with his family, work, and his health. So one Thursday morning Lonnie decided to talk to Richard, a trusted old police officer buddy that he greatly admired.

Richard told Lonnie that he totally understood because approximately ten years ago, he too got involved in careless and excessive drinking. Indeed, Richard mentioned to Lonnie that careless drinking can cause so many difficulties in an individual's life that just about everything of significance can be ruined. And lastly, Richard suggested that Lonnie make an appointment with an alcohol counselor at the work-affiliated drug and alcohol abuse rehab center.
Since his employee's assistance program was affiliated with this rehab center, it was not only quite convenient but also very affordable to obtain treatment about his careless and excessive drinking. And due to the fact that the personnel at the drug and alcohol treatment center was competent, supportive, and non-judgmental, Lonnie would be able to get alcohol treatment that made sense to him and something he could follow through on.
After talking to his doctor about how his drinking was negatively affecting his pocketbook, relationship with his family, work, and his health, Lonnie understood that he was burning the candle at both ends with his crazy work hours and his irresponsible drinking. Once he grasped the fact that he was digging himself into a rut, after detoxification and with the assistance of his psychiatrist, and after thirteen weeks in rehabilitation, he was finally able to quit drinking and stop working overtime.
The outcome was that Lonnie viewed life differently now that he was in alcohol recovery and learned about alcoholism facts. Simply put, due to his alcohol treatment he not only noticed that he actually had more money now even though he was working far fewer hours each week, but he was more patient when interacting with his wife and his children, he felt better and more healthy, and he had more quality time to spend with his family. As luck would have it, now that he stopped drinking, Lonnie and his wife were not only starting to save some money for a new house but he also felt more alert and more energized than anytime since he and his wife got married.
