The importance of proper cardio shoes is often under-rated. People talk about doing the exercises perfectly, planning out a routine, eating right, hydrating properly, and all varieties of other work-out recommendations, but they rarely get to talk about good fitness center shoes. But ask any fitness trainer and they will tell you how important it's. Of course, if you are taking an aerobics class, then footwear doesn't matter. You will do all of your cardiovascular exercise on a padded mat, and wearing shoes is going to be discouraged, if not outright banned from the class in order to preserve the floor. But for many other aerobic exercises (with swimming and a few other excepted) proper aerobic shoes are a requirement. And as a fitness trainer will tell you, you just can't safeguard your feet with-out them.

The form of aerobic shoes depends on what you are doing for your work-out. If you're a serious runner, you need to get running shoes. These are lighter than other kinds of cardio shoes, and thicken padding for where runners need it. They are no good for playing tennis, for example, as they provide almost no lateral ankle support. For tennis, or lots of other exercises that involve more than just moving in a straight line, you need a different kind of aerobic shoes: cross trainers or running shoes. Fundamentally, both of these cardiovascular shoes are about the same thing - the contemporary version of the fitness center shoe, with a whole lot of padding, but still a low top to allow some flexibility and movement at the ankle.

On the other hand, if you play basketball, you need bigger sturdier cardio shoe to adequately safeguard your ankle. These are called high tops, and they run up all the way to the top of the ankle. They are great for this sport, because you are repeatedly jumping high, bursting into sudden sprints in assorted directions, and doing many other things that can easily injure your ankle. They safeguard you from injuries more effectively than any other sort of cardio shoes, and you will see nearly all basketball players wearing them. They're not good for the types of sprints that you have in tennis, however, and so are rarely if ever worn by tennis players. Then again, if you are a cross country runner, you need different cardiovascular shoes entirely. They will be kind of a combination between running shoes and light hiking boots, with a fairly light build and a good deal of traction on the bottom. If you go for a career in personal training this is a single one of the aspects of fitness you must know all about - but that is another story entirely.
