Donald used to brag to his pals how he could stay employed at a demanding and full-time job and get smashed virtually every night. Sadly, after maintaining this unhealthy lifestyle for around two years, he began to observe different alcohol related issues.

For example, he had a hard time getting up for work because he felt so sleepy when he got up. Moreover, most mornings Donald experienced a horrible hangover. In short, the combination of his lack of get-up-and-go and his hangovers did not make it easy for him to get up and feel inspired to go to work. To add fuel to the fire, roughly a week ago he received his second drunk driving citation in the past four months.

To compound things further, at his job his last two performance evaluations were less than suitable. And lastly, his two-and-a-half-year relationship with his girlfriend had declined due to his depression, angry outbursts, financial difficulties, and his lack of patience.

Even though Donald was only twenty-eight years old, he simply began looking like he was in his late thirties. Sadly, this is what abusive and irresponsible drinking can do to an individual. And from a realistic perspective he comprehended that he was going through the negative effects of alcohol abuse or alcoholism and that he was too young to throw away his life to abusive and excessive drinking. So at first he tried to drink responsibly and in moderation. Regrettably, he soon comprehended the fact that he lost all control after ingesting his first drink. Since this was a circumstance that was repeated over and over again, this obviously concerned him a great deal. In actual fact, he started to wonder if he was exhibiting some of the stages of alcoholism.

After articulating his alcohol drinking problems and his careless and excessive drinking with his lady friend, he eventually decided to make an appointment to see his healthcare practitioner. When Donald saw his doctor, he sincerely confirmed that he has been abusing alcohol, that he may be displaying behavior that is typical of the various alcoholism stages, and that he wants to abstain from drinking. He then confirmed that drinking responsibly and in moderation does not work well for him and as a consequence, he wants to learn how he can live an alcohol-free life.

Donald also told his doctor about his depression and how this mental health problem was negatively influencing his relationship with his girlfriend. His healthcare professional referred Donald to Doctor Plaff, a drug and alcohol addiction psychiatrist, who influenced Donald to register in a drug and alcohol rehab facility as an in-patient for alcohol detox and alcohol rehab. The good news is that Donald would also be able to get treatment for his depression at this treatment facility.

After five months of comprehensive rehabilitation, Donald left the residential rehab facility and continued his recovery via going to local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and via outpatient counseling. Inspired to change his life in a more positive direction, Donald joined a gym and began working out three or four times per week. Within five months Donald was a new man. He was not depressed anymore, he was in shape, he was eating nutritious meals, and most significant of all, he remained sober for several months. He also did not resort to angry outbursts, he became more patient, and he became a more compassionate person in his relationship with his girlfriend. In short, refraining from drinking was the best decision Donald had ever made.
