Richard had a very difficult time keeping a job. As a matter of fact, because of his slothfulness and lack of drive, he was out of a job far more frequently than he was employed. And when he did land a job, he had a very difficult time getting to work in a timely manner, he often got less than passing performance assessments, and he called off sick so habitually that he usually got fired a week or two after he started working.
It goes without saying that one of the results of Richard's appalling work record was the fact that he was almost totally broke from day-to-day. In spite of Richard's poor work history and financial negligence, conversely, by some means he made it his business to drink in an irresponsible and hazardous manner from day-to-day.
So it came as no big surprise when Richard received a second DUI. When he went before the court, the magistrate clearly stated to Richard that his alcohol-related actions was irresponsible and, consequently, he was going to sentence Richard to serve five months incarcerated in jail.
During his time behind bars, Richard was expected to learn more about alcoholism facts such as alcohol related effects and alcohol deaths, about the damaging effects of irresponsible and hazardous drinking, and he was required to get alcohol counseling. The judge highlighted the fact that unless Richard gets quality alcohol rehab and discovers how to live a life of abstinence, he will most probably be spending a considerable amount of time in jail.
Richard stated that he understood what the judge was proclaiming but he still claimed that placement in the local jail was not the right decision. The magistrate disagreed and said that it was his duty to keep individuals off the streets who drive and drink and who get arrested for a DWI. To support this perspective, the magistrate articulated some venerable, highly researched alcoholism and alcohol abuse statistics that underscored some of the injurious results that are correlated with irresponsible and hazardous drinking such as alcohol related deaths.
Even though Richard knew that he drank in an excessive manner, he never thought that he was an alcohol dependent individual. So it was a real bombshell when Richard started suffering from chronic alcoholism signs and symptoms and alcohol withdrawals nearly two hours after going to jail.
To manage his alcohol withdrawals in a harm free manner, Richard was life flighted to a drug and alcohol treatment hospital for alcohol detoxification and then brought back to the city jail. While in jail Richard received alcohol rehab but because he received this therapy as something that was mandated for him, he neglected to take ownership of his excessive drinking.
When his time in the municipal jail was completed, the judge forcefully told Richard that he would be under strict observation and would be mandated to take random breath alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard neglected to take ownership of his drinking circumstances and how he unenthusiastically followed the treatment regimen while behind bars, the judge knew that it was basically a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his irresponsible and abusive drinking behavior.
As the magistrate thought about Richard's circumstance, he couldn't help but think about how some individuals never "connect the dots" and learn how to live in a productive and adult manner.
