When Lois was in high school, she had achieved a reputation as a person who studied much of the time and who rarely, if ever, "got down" and drank with her peers. She seemed determined to do well academically so that she would be able to find a career that she not only enjoyed but one that also gave her some security from a financial perspective.
After Lois finished high school, she applied to and was accepted into an outstanding program in linguistics. Her logic behind this decision was that this area of study would be good preparation for law school and would not be comparable to the majority of law school applicants who select political science as their undergraduate major.
Lois was the type of individual who worked vigorously to finish what she was doing and then would take a few days off when she could. As is the case, nevertheless, most of the things she did between school sessions or during summer breaks did not have much to do with drinking. It almost goes without saying that Lois was anything but a partygoer. Now that her final examinations for her second year in law school were finished and being delighted with the fact that she had done a super job on her finals, nevertheless, she wanted to let her hair down and have some fun.
So Lois and a few of her classmates went to a local tavern where they had a few glasses of wine. As the evening advanced, Lois and her buddies continued to drink. As a matter of fact she was having such a fabulous time that she didn't want the night to end.
After drinking around forty-five minutes when Lois started to slur her speech, talk in a confused manner, and then pass out, in spite of this, her pals instantly realized that they needed to call that they needed to call 911, the emergency services number, and ask for medical assistance because they thought that Lois was exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms.
Lois was very aware that she came close to dying from an alcohol overdose and, as a consequence, was gratified to be alive. At the same time, nevertheless, she was somewhat disheartened knowing that she had almost died the previous night. Her parents knew how rigorously she worked at college and how little she permitted herself to socialize with her buddies. Nonetheless, they also knew that Lois needed to steer clear of abusive and excessive drinking.
As a result, they recommended that down the road, whenever a drinking circumstance develops, that she always drink in moderation and responsibly. Lois was of the same opinion and gave her word to her friends and to her parents that she would never again drink in a hazardous manner. In her own words, "I never had an inkling that I might become one of the alcohol poisoning statistics in the local town newspaper. I now understand that irresponsible and hazardous drinking is not my style. I swear that this will never happen again."
Fortunately, Lois was not only "book smart" but she also possessed. That is, she instantaneously knew that she had made an error in judgment and made up her mind that she would not make the same error in judgment again. In truth, she now knew that she had involved herself in "binge drinking" and that even one instance of this form of abusive and excessive drinking can result in a loss of life.
