Lenny and Angie have been married for three years. They wanted to have some fun and excitement before they decided to have some kids and so they with forethought developed an especially vibrant social life.
The key issue, however, is that virtually everything they do socially somehow includes drinking. As an illustration, all of the sporting events, family get-togethers, parties with friends, dinner engagements, and happy hours they patronize are related to drinking.
If they were responsible or moderate drinkers this wouldn't be a major issue. Since they drink quite heavily, however, they are beginning to become aware of some definite alcohol-related difficulties in their lives.
For example, just a few days ago Lenny was placed under arrest for his first DUI and has been calling off from work because of alcohol-related health issues. Not only this, but Lenny's last three performance appraisals at the office have been less than adequate and he has begun to forget what he does or says while he drinks. As a final point, Lenny has been having sleep-related problems and his family is starting to exhibit some disquiet about his drinking circumstances.
Angie, on the other hand, has been feeling dejected about life and to deal with this, she has been drinking more regularly than any time in the past nine months. What is more, Angie has been getting quite a few throbbing migraine headaches and suffering from very bad hangovers after drinking. Finally, Angie has been feeling significantly less active when she gets up in the morning, she has been showing up late for work, and she has been getting some damaging criticism from her friends, coworkers, relatives, and family members about her unhealthy and abusive drinking.
One Monday evening while watching TV, Lenny and Angie accidentally discovered an attention-grabbing documentary about alcohol facts and alcoholism facts in general and about the signs of alcoholism in particular. This TV special was a real source of revelation to Angie and Lenny because some of the alcohol facts that were gone over seemed like they were indisputably related to more than a few of the drinking difficulties Angie and Lenny had been experiencing.
With thoughts of the television program still fresh in her mind, Angie asked Lenny if some of the alcoholism signs they have been manifesting could be a signal that they are alcohol dependent or possibly becoming alcoholic. Lenny didn't know the answer to Angie's question and so he recommended that they make an appointment with one of the therapists at the local drug and alcohol abuse rehabilitation center to find out more about the seriousness of their drinking issues.
Ironically, although their drinking behavior hadn't yet changed, it was apparent that Angie and Lenny were at the very least concentrating on their drinking problems, they were excited about finding out more about their drinking situation, and they were concerned about how they could appreciably reduce or eliminate the alcohol-related difficulties that had begun to escalate.
When Angie and Lenny went to bed that night, they came to a decision that the next morning, Lenny would call and make an appointment for both of them at the alcohol treatment clinic located just West of the State Capital. After they promised one another that they would do whatever it takes to rise above the drinking problems that had materialized in their lives, they actually had the best night's sleep they could remember in the last nine months.
