Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most financially challenged co-ed high school in the region. Although she had been teaching for only five years, she had already acquired a reputation as an educator with teaching techniques that encouraged and stimulated her pupils to learn and to think.
For example, one Thursday morning at 9:30 she addressed the pupils in her class and announced the following: "For the next few days we are going to learn about some commonplace alcoholism signs from a more broad-based point of view and we are also going to learn about a number of the best known signs of alcoholism from a less general and more specific point of view."

Miss Jackson asked her pupils to go over the data on the piece of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within 20 or 30 seconds, virtually every student in the classroom raised her or his hand. It was evident that the students had some concerns, issues, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism professionals. For example, virtually every person in the classroom disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, specifically, "Do you feel exceedingly sick when you abstain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then explained to the pupils in her class why this answer was the most precise indicator of alcohol addiction. She underlined the fact that the most important difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.
In essence this means that when an alcohol dependent person abruptly stops drinking, he or she will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the individual who is alcohol dependent, the pupils started to comprehend the main difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.
A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating the end of the class.
