Just a week ago, Ryan applied for a job as a bouncer at one of the local nightclubs. He had studied gatka, ninjitsu, judo, karate, and aikido for five years; he was a body builder; he took daily vitamins, supplements, and minerals; he was into health foods and healthy eating; and he seemed well suited for such a position. When Ryan got notice that he had been selected for the job, he was very delighted. Since this was a private nightclub, however, he had to go through a six week instructional class.

On the first day of class, the instructor started talking about people who drink excessively and what the bartenders, bouncers, and barmaids should do when this situation arises. When the instructor started speaking about alcohol poisoning, Ryan was happy to learn that all of the new employees had to learn about alcohol poisoning and what they should do when they noticed a person who was exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms or displaying the signs of alcohol overdose.

More explicitly, all the new bartenders, bouncers, and barmaids learned that nausea and vomiting were almost always one of the first signs of alcohol poisoning and that unconsciousness was perchance the most highly identifiable alcohol poisoning symptom or sign. The trainer went out of his way to highlight the fact that alcohol poisoning symptoms were messages from the body and from the brain that the drinker had consumed more alcohol than his or her body can metabolize.

There were, nonetheless, more than a few other signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning that all the new employees were taught to recognize. For instance, the members of the class learned that people who suffer from alcohol poisoning exhibit confusion, they are difficult to awaken, exhibit poor reflex responses, and they often have seizures.

Furthermore, the members of the class were made aware that many people who experience alcohol poisoning also exhibit slow, shallow or irregular breathing; blue tinged or pale skin; slurred speech; and little response from painful stimuli, for instance from pinching.

To highlight the effect that binge drinking has on alcohol poisoning, the lecturer explained to the class that an individual who gets inebriated just a few times every year is, by definition, engaging in alcohol abuse. Such an individual, however, is in all probability not alcohol addicted, but is probably engaging in binge drinking. As stated by the teacher, engaging in binge drinking even once, unfortunately, can result in an alcohol overdose that in some situations can be deadly.

The teacher then told the members of the class that the most appropriate response for alcohol poisoning is the following: if it is suspected that an individual has alcohol poisoning, call 911 and ask for emergency medical assistance, even if the person is underage. By following this course of action, the person will get the prompt alcohol poisoning treatment he or she needs.

After learning about alcohol poisoning and especially about the signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning, it can be emphasized, Ryan realized that he had learned some valuable information that might save an individual's life in the future. Without a doubt, Ryan learned that knowledge of the usual alcohol poisoning signs and symptoms and knowing how to quickly and properly respond to such symptoms and signs (by immediately calling 911 and asking for urgent medical assistance) can help an individual avoid a fatal alcohol overdose.
